The U-238 series of radionuclides is of relevance in a variety of environmental contexts ranging from the remediation of former uranium mining and milling facilities to the deep geological disposal of solid radioactive wastes. Herein, we review what is known concerning the behaviour of radionuclides from the U-238 decay chain in soils and plants.
The numbers below each label indicate the length of the particular radionuclide's half-life. Decay for Uranium 238 (U 238) This Factsheet shows the radioactive decay chain of uranium238, the resulting products, the radition emitted in the process and U-238 Decay Series Isotope half-life gamma energies (KeV) U238. 4.468 x 10 9 Uranium-238 (238 U or U-238) is the most common isotope of uranium found in nature, with a relative abundance of 99%. Unlike uranium-235, it is non-fissile, which means it cannot sustain a chain reaction in a thermal-neutron reactor. However, it is fissionable by fast neutrons, and is fertile, meaning it can be transmuted to fissile plutonium-239. The three naturally-occurring actinide alpha decay chains given below—thorium, uranium/radium (from U-238), and actinium (from U-235)—each ends with its own specific lead isotope (Pb-208, Pb-206, and Pb-207 respectively). 1998-08-01 · U-238 partial decay chain There is a large body of data related to the environmental monitoring of Th-234/Pa-234m, much of which has relied on an abundance of 0.0059 for the 1001 keV gamma-ray of Pa-234m as reported by Bjornholm and Nielsen (1963) , and some of which has used a value of 0.0091 as recommended by Sutton et al. (1993) .

U-238 decay modes are alpha and, quite rarely, spontaneous fission (5e-5 %). The single beta-decay is forbidden because U-238 is a gg-nuclide. Double beta decay occurs with a probability of 2e-10%

For example, the decay chain that begins with Uranium-238 culminates in Lead-206, after forming intermediates such as Uranium-234, Thorium-230, Radium-226, and Radon-222. 2017-09-12 2018-05-28 The nuclides generated during the decay of the very long-lived natural radionuclides U-238 (half-life 4.5 bn years), U-235 (half-life 0.7 bn years) and Th-232 (half-life 14 bn years) are in turn radioactive, and therefore decay What does U 238 decay into?
